Ruy Lopes Filho holds a Bachelor's Degree in Civil Engineering from the School of Engineering at the Federal University of Rio Grande do Sul (1968) and a Post-Graduate Degree in Industrial Engineering from Pontific Catholic University of Rio de Janeiro (1969).

He began his career in the Gerdau Group in 1971 in the corporate financial sector having already worked at Citibank for two years. From 1975 to 1982 he sequentially held the positions of Administrative Manager of Comercial Gerdau, General Administrative Manager of the Gerdau Group, and General Financial Manager of the Group.

Since 1982 he has held a Director Position in the Gerdau Group in the respective order: Financial Director, Planning Director, Executive Director of Gerdau IT Services, Executive Director of Comercial Gerdau, and Executive Director of Laminadora do Sul S/A.

From May 2005 to January 2006 he holded the position of Planning, Social Communication, and Business Development Director for the Gerdau Group.

Currently he is in charge of the Strategic Projects as a Vice President.
